The most commonly
used drugs by teenagers include: Marijuana, Cocaine and prescription
medication. Teenagers at rave parties commonly use other drugs such
as DMT, Ecstasy and other Hallucinogens. These drugs when taken
regularly over an extended period of time can be addictive both
physically and psychologically. Often times these drugs can have
harmful physical effects and when taken at high doses can become
fatal. Drug treatment for boys who have become addicted is often
times the only outlet families may have to ensure their child’s
safety.
Many substances
such as prescription drugs and illicit Opiates can lead to physical
withdrawal symptoms that must be treated with special medications.
Drug treatment for boys and adults many times must be implemented
after the detoxification processes in order to ensure there is little
chance of relapse. The treatment process may last anywhere from 30
days to 6 months depending upon the severity of the addiction.
The main objective of drug treatment programs is to produce lasting
recovery and assist the patient in leading a healthy and productive
life without the damaging effects of drugs and alcohol. The two
primary types of drug treatment are long-term residential treatment
and short-term outpatient treatment. While the short-term involves
counseling sessions and other supportive services. Long-term drug treatment for boys offers extended services that include support for
both the child and the family. This holistic approach has proven to
be more effective in producing lasting results and assisting the teen
in becoming a healthy young-adult. Other methods of treatment that
involve heavy doses of medication, such as Methadone maintenance can
often time prove to be more harmful than helpful. Residential
treatment that includes therapeutic services has been proven to be
the most effective method of treating drug addicted teens.
Drug addiction, at
the end of the day, provides nothing but a temporary escape from
life. Often times leading to loneliness, depression and physical
issues. Obviously the safest path would include a life of abstinence
from harmful substances. However, realistically, teenagers will
experiment with illicit substances at some point. For some of these
teens drug addiction will follow and possibly lead to addiction. In
these cases, when recovery is essential, drug treatment for teens is
necessary to produce lasting change.
